making a splash....
Mamo Jo's beginnings...
An antique Tahitian shell lei given to Lisa (chief mermaid) by her mother provided the original inspiration for Mamo Jo's first collection and signature design.
" one day as I went to wear the lei it fell apart in my hands. Using the loose shells I created a new style, my first jewellery piece which became our signature design - the shell flower necklace'.
That was in 1995. From there she began creating bright, fun and unique designs, making each piece by hand. As Mamo Jo's popularity grew, Lisa started creating a silver range using 'exotic shells I'd collected from my travels all over the world'. By 1998 Mamo Jo, Mamo Jo Unisex and its sister brand Mamo Jo Fantasy have been supplying to all the major surf retail stores up and down the Australian Eastern seaboard - as well as selling to over 200 stores worldwide!
the next wave ...
In May 2000, the Chief Mermaid took the next step and ventured into the world of high fashion.
Mercedes Australian Fashion Week 2000 heralded the beginning of her new label - Lisa Carney Designs (LCD) - a dynamic collection of ocean-inspired jewellery that sent the fashion press into a frenzy.
A solo show followed in May 2002 as part of the Australian Fashion Week launching the new unisex collection designed in conjunction with Ben Derbyshire - held at the landmark 'icebergs' on Bondi Beach. The breathtaking ocean backdrop and glorious morning light added to the eye-catching pieces adorning the catwalk mermaids (and mermen); dripping with the ocean's natural sheen and aquatic beauty. LCD is now sold in exclusive department stores and boutiques worldwide, and has become synonymous with stylists for cutting edge designs and pieces.
From surf shops to the world of high fashion, across all seas - inspirations of the magic of the ocean
